Meet the Team: Abel García Celestrín

What’s your earliest tech-related memory?

I remember my uncle coming back from his travels and telling me that if I wanted to travel as much as he did, I’d have to study a lot. I then asked “what did you study?” and he answered “computer science” – so I did!

Describe your day-to-day routine, if you have one.

I wake up early, workout for 45 to 60 mins, then I get my son ready for school and drop him off, and come to work; that’s about it.

People who work with tech can be superstitious. Do you have a favourite computer superstition or ritual that probably doesn’t work – but you still do it anyway?

Not really, no; I’m not very superstitious.

Who is your professional hero?

I think Steve Jobs – probably not for his technological influence, but how he saw a way of making tech approachable and within reach for everyone. Philosophically, he did a lot to bring tech forward, the same as Bill Gates for the personal computer.

How did you end up working at Cleverbit?

I was approached by their recruiter, and wanted a change.

Is there a project that you’ve worked on at Cleverbit that really stood out to you for whatever reason?

I was involved in one project that gave me the opportunity to work on new technology and put into practice an idea that I’ve been entertaining for a long time; it also gave me a chance to bring that client greater influence, so it was a win-win-win all around.

What’s the office culture like at Cleverbit?

Our culture is friendly and relaxed. We don’t have an imposing culture really; we pretty much just do what we enjoy doing because we have the freedom to do so, and it really creates this huge sense of commitment which is why I look forward to work every day.

What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?

I would probably want to work in architecture or industrial design.
